Going for a Dental Checkup? Remember to Ask These 4 Important Questions

As a general rule of thumb, you should have a dental checkup about twice a year. This appointment is important because it gives your dentist a chance to assess the health of your smile and combat small problems before they get bigger. Yet, this appointment should also be taken as an opportunity to prepare yourself for caring for your own smile. There is a short list of questions to ask when going for a dental checkup.

What is your overall mouth health status?

Does the dentist consider your mouth and smile to be in pretty good health? Do they believe there is room for improvement? This simple question gives you insight into the problems the dentist sees or potential problems that could develop.

Are there signs of other things you should tell your doctor?

Much like your eyes, your mouth is a viewing portal to the health inside your body. Some dental issues can be signs of serious health risks. For example, sometimes people have issues with gum disease when they have problems with high blood sugar.

What’s up with these new symptoms with your teeth and gums?

Have you had a little gum inflammation, a new sensitivity to cold drinks, or a strange spot on a tooth? No matter how seemingly small and unimportant your new symptom is, it is worth bringing up to your dentist. Even something as tiny as a bump on your gums can be a sign of an abscessed tooth.

Is there anything you should change about your dental care habits?

Dentistry and oral care are constantly evolving with new and better at-home dental hygiene products. If you have been following the same routine and your dentist finds a problem, whether it is excess tartar or small cavities developing, make sure you ask what it is you should change about your routine.

If you need to schedule an appointment for your checkup, reach out to us at Southern Oaks Dental Care in Beaumont, Texas.
