Invisalign® (invisible braces) are clear, and removable orthodontic aligners, introduced as an alternative to the more traditional metal, or ceramic braces. Invisalign® braces are approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and can be used for patients as young as thirteen. Depending on what dental alignment problems you have, and the severity, Invisalign® might be a good alternative that is less noticeable, and would require fewer visits to the orthodontist or dentist.
Your dentist will examine your teeth initially, to determine the amount of correction necessary. An orthodontist may be consulted to calculate the amount of correction needed with computer imaging. A mold of your teeth is then created, and sent to the Invisalign® laboratory. Clear, plastic trays will then be custom fabricated, which will apply pressure at the appropriate points, to make the teeth move into alignment. Invisalign® trays need to be worn 22 hours a day or more, to achieve quicker dental movement. Every two to three weeks, you will receive a new set of trays, with graduating pressure points to move the teeth further into alignment.
You will need to continue seeing your dentist every six weeks for a progress evaluation and check up. Invisalign® (invisible braces) are worn on average from six to eighteen months, depending on the patient's compliance with the wearing schedule, and the severity of correction to be made. After the Invisalign® treatment, a retainer must be worn indefinitely, to prevent teeth from shifting again. There are limitations to using Invisalign®, as opposed to traditional metal, or ceramic braces.
If you have severe bite issues, vertical problems where your teeth are different heights, severely rotated teeth, or if you suffer from severe overcrowding, traditional braces may be recommended. If you have bridges, or other extensive dental restoration, Invisalign® may not be a suitable alternative.
Invisalign® braces are more comfortable, without metal parts scraping your mouth, and removable, which aids in oral hygiene. Consult with your dentist, to seek all options available, and Invisalign® (invisible braces) may be a great alternative to traditional braces.
